ICPAC is the Regional Implementation Center for the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD) thematic actions of the MESA Project, focusing on Land Degradation Assessment, Natural Habitat Conservation and Forest Monitoring Services.
The IGAD Thematic Action (http://mesa.icpac.net/) delivers the following Information Services:
1) Land Degradation Assessment. This service will deliver Land Degradation Index Maps (LDIM) and bulletins at a biannual rate providing an indication of the risk of land degradation at low resolution at national and region levels as well as at high resolution over selected areas (“hot spots”). The implementation of this service will be carried in partnership with the Regional Centre of Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD. in Kenya. 2) Natural Habitat Conservation Assessment. This service will provide regularly updated information and tools to assess the state of IGAD Protected Areas (PA) and to monitor and prioritize them according to biodiversity values and threats. 3) Forest Monitoring. This service will involve the use of EO data to analyze forest cover changes, setting up institutional arrangements to steer the Forest Monitoring process; strengthening the capacity of local personnel in deforestation/degradation mapping and the overall Forest Monitoring/REDD+ process. The main goal is to obtain information on the forest degradation and deforestation at regional, national and ecosystems levels. The implementation of this service will also be carried in partnership with the Regional Centre of Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) in Kenya.
