Plant diseases and pests have significant impact on the production of crops and are the causes of yield loss in West Africa. Remote sensing technologies are useful tools in detecting pests and diseases over a large area. Currently AGRHYMET, using applications of EO data, acquires spatial distribution information of pest and crop disease over a large area. Based on this information, AGRHYMET advises ECOWAS Member States, regarding the current status of pest and crop diseases in the region.
Plant Pathologist at AGRHYMET, Dr. Mbaye Ndiaye, says “Satellite data are critical inputs to monitor and under- stand pest and plant diseases over a large area. AGRHYMET utilizes Earth Observation technologies to monitor and understand current plant diseases in the field, infection status and advice pertinent institutions in the ECOWAS region.”
Internship students are also using Earth Observation data for their studies in the area of monitoring of pest and crop diseases at AGRHYMET. AGRHYMET is one of the regional implementing centres of the Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (MESA) Project under the thematic action water management for crop and rangeland for the ECOWAS region.
