EO applications for Tracking Wildfire in West Africa

The West African Savannah is prone to wildfire. Earth Observation technologies and applications offer a means of collecting relevant bushfire data for monitoring fire risks in the region.

AGRHYMET is one of the regional implementing centres of the MESA project. One of the services of AGRHYMET through the MESA project is providing wildfire information to the ECOWAS member states.

While briefing the 2nd Communication workshop participants, Moulaye Mahamane Oumarou, Information System expert at AGRHYMET said “previously, we can detect more than two hundred point fires at once, that may or may not be potentially dangerous fires. So, we have to go physically to check whether the fire is potentially dangerous or not. However, now using the new version of the satellite receiving station and with the technical sup- port from the Joint Research Centre (JRC), we use a new model to detect wildfire in better resolution. We don’t need to travel physically anymore.”

Togo, Nigeria and Senegal are a few examples that utilised the wildfire tracking information produced by the MESA ECOWAS Land Thematic Action.
