Decision and Policy makers drawn from 29 different countries of the Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (MESA) Project beneficiary institutions of Africa gathered together at the African Union Commission to attend the second MESA Policy Dialogue workshop, which was held from 10 to 11 May 2017.
Opening the workshop, Dr. Godfrey Bahiigwa, Director of Rural Economy and Agriculture of the African Union Commission says "the relevance of all of us, lies on addressing the needs of the communities in order to enable them improve their living standards and secure their livelihoods. As Africans, together we envision an integrated, peaceful, and prosperous Africa that drives its own agenda. This is what our Heads of State and Government across Africa have committed our respective countries to achieve as stated in the Africa Agenda 2063."
The main objective of the MESA project is to support African decision makers and planners in designing and implementing policies and development plans towards sustainable development of Africa. Policy Dialogue is one of important tools to achieve MESA's result area number 4. i.e. in order to strengthened political and policy development frameworks initiatives concerning Earth Observation for environment and security in Africa. 43 Policy and decision makers attended the 2nd MESA Policy Dialogue Workshop.
During the workshop, policy and decision makers exchanged their practical experiences on how satellite based Earth Observation data and information through the MESA Project has influenced policy development frameworks; informed decision making processes in their respective countries and how MESA results will support the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (GMES & Africa) and other related programs of Africa. Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture of the African Union Commission is in charge of the MESA Project in the African Union. The second MESA policy dialogue is the successor of the first Policy Dialogue Workshop which was held in Kigali, Rwanda from September 19 to 20, 2016. It was organized by MESA training contractor- Particip GmbH.
