The first round of the Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (MESA) Peer Reviews started recently in Niamey and Nairobi beginning on 12 January 2016. The objective of the Peer Reviews is to improve the implementation of the MESA services at the implementation centres. This will be done using recognised experts or peers in the following areas of expertise for Earth Observation and environmental monitoring: land, marine, water and climate; and by users of these services. As a result of close cooperation between the European Commission, the African Regional Economic Communities, the ACP Secretariat, the African Union Commission and EUMETSAT, a succession of projects have been organised to help African countries get better access to Earth observation data. The focus for the initial PUMA project was to provide access to satellite data for weather forecasting.
